I'll be Home (of Distinction) for Christmas: Our merry makeover that made the magazine

If walls could talk, this 1941 home would have more than a tale or two to tell. That's why we're grateful for Wrightsville Beach Magazine naming our historic beach renovation project December's Home of Distinction. What a wonderful way to end the year!

The King family found this gem in 2015 while in search of a home with character. The World War II-era beach house on Henderson Street had just the charm the parents of four were looking for and soon became the fifth owners of the historic house. In our Home of Distinction feature, homeowner Bill King says, "Everything has a story. I love how we kept the character and made a really good house even better."

There's a game we play when we're looking to hold on to the past and make room for the future. Both age and codes make things a bit tricky when it comes to custom home renovation but that's a challenge we enjoy. This older home had beautiful pine floors that were original to the house but they weren't exactly level. "The Kings wanted to leave them just as they were," Wrightsville Beach Magazine tells. So we worked with what existed, replaced what needed to be replaced and worked with the character of the old house to make it new.

Like most traditional Southern homes, the rooms were all separated into unique spaces dedicated to function––dining, cooking, reading. The new homeowners wanted to open things up to make room for the views the home's location directly on the Intracoastal Waterway had to offer. Our team carefully broke through walls and added floor to ceiling windows maintaining the 70-plus years of character while making space for an open-concept.

We totally renovated the all-white kitchen. Painted every wall and added new fixtures to almost every room. We kept some of the flooring that has made its way back into style and added a whole new master bathroom with a wall-to-wall countertop with his and hers vanities, an enormous rainfall shower and a free-standing soaking tub that stares off into the sound.

Many thanks for a wonderful 2017! Here's to many more!
