Thanksgiving is just around the corner and with the guest list piling high it's easy to start thinking about all of the things you need and want to replace or renovate in the kitchen. It's the heart of your home and so it is important to make this space where we gather together a sacred one.
If you're looking to remodel your kitchen on a budget and before the turkey hits the table, try just one or a few of our eight cheap and easy kitchen remodeling suggestions. We're sure they'll make all the difference.
Make a splash
If your kitchen is feeling a bit drab, do just this one thing and your kitchen will take on a whole new vibe. Visit your local tile store and find something vibrant. Installing a new backsplash is one of the surest ways to renovate your kitchen and really make a statement.
Top it off
Countertops can be pricey especially if you're looking for stone. The good thing is that it's actually pretty trendy to mix and match your countertops. If you've found a marble countertop you can't live without but you also can't afford for all of your surfaces, use it on one surface and find a wood countertop that matches for the others. Not always, but oftentimes, wooden countertops are your most inexpensive way to top off your kitchen remodel.
Open up
This might sound crazy but one of the cheapest ways to make your kitchen space bigger is to fake it until you make it. If you're not able to break through walls to literally make your kitchen an open-concept space, try painting the walls white. The color white reflects light and scientifically tricks our eyes into perceiving a space is bigger than it is.
On or off
Your appliances are either on or off. We're not literally speaking here. Hopefully, they are running just fine to serve their purposes. We're talking about two things: how they look and how much energy they're using. If you're on a budget and you want to make a change while saving on your energy bill on down the road, replace your old appliances for newer models that look better and have an Energy Star rating.
Don't force it
Okay. Let's say you really, really want to renovate your kitchen ASAP but you don't have the piggy bank full quite yet for all of your big plans. Let's also say that you want to make an impression on your Thanksgiving guests and the clock is ticking. Here's what we suggest: don't force it. Trying to make big renovations before Turkey Day on a shoestring budget isn't the best idea. So keep saving and compromise. Visit your local plumbing supply company or Habitat for Humanity and grab a new faucet. With just a little know-how and a few tools, faucets can easily be installed on your own. This is a cheap way to curb your kitchen remodel appetite for now. Meanwhile, when Thanksgiving Day comes, keep a pad and paper by your side. Make notes of all the things you notice while you're cooking the biggest meal of the year and send those to your builder if you're in need of a rough estimate while you're saving.
Color me rad
If you think your kitchen is just blah, paint should do the trick. One trend we've noticed in many of our kitchen remodel projects over the past few years is two-toned cabinets. Try painting just the island a new, vibrant color for a cheap and easy change of scenery.
Top to bottom
If your stained cabinets are looking a little worn and torn, it might be a good idea to resurface and stain them again. Going along with the painting of your kitchen island idea, many folks are choosing to paint the top cabinets and stain the bottom. Whatever tickles your fancy. You make the rules in your own home.
BYOB
No. We don't mean "bring your own beer." We're talking "build your own bar." Want to add a sweet spot to your kitchen, dining room or living area? BYOB. This small remodeling project could simply mean moving furniture around to designate a nook with storage space for glasses and cocktail supplies. Yes, it could cost you zip, zilch, nada, nothing. Or, if you want to get fancy, this project could mean working with a custom builder to create your home bar in a more professional manner. Up to you. Cheers.
