We know that building a new home can feel slightly intimidating—you want it to be just right! Your home should be a sacred space that encompasses both comfort as well as functionality for your lifestyle. If you’re planning to build a new home, but you don’t know where to start, let us help! Ask yourself these five questions when choosing the right blueprints for your home.

What’s your budget? First and foremost, know your budget. Having this as a guideline before your search even begins will make the entire process much smoother.

What will your lifestyle look like in your home? Consider what your hobbies are, where you enjoy spending the most time and any other requirements that fit your lifestyle. Do you love cooking and need a kitchen worthy of a Food Network star? Will you be working from home and need a separate office? Would you like a garage? Storage space? Make a checklist of your must-haves before choosing your blueprints!

How much space do you need to function comfortably? Do you spend a lot of time outdoors? Creating a large livable porch off the back of your house is a great way to expand your space without spending more money building a larger home.

Consider the future when thinking about space as well. Is this a starter home or a forever home? Do you plan to have kids? Do you have friends or family that will be visiting often? Keep these things in mind when considering how many bedrooms and bathrooms your home should have.

Do the room proportions coincide well with what they’ll be used for? If you spend a lot of time entertaining, you might consider a bigger kitchen and dining room. If small gatherings are more your speed and you would prefer to create more space elsewhere, consider a breakfast area off of the kitchen and nix the dining room altogether!

Does the proposed design fit well with your property? The size and shape of the property are important to consider when thinking of how your home will be laid out. Is the land flat or on an incline? Is it long and narrow or more of a square? Also keep in mind the direction the lot faces. Is it important that the master bedroom or kitchen face east for morning light?
